We’re thrilled to welcome our very first Volunteer & Community Engagement Manager. Say hello to Julie Johnson!
Julie will engage and train volunteers, support our programs and outreach, and help increase our capacity and visibility.
We interviewed Julie this week so you can get to know her, too.

Tell us a little about your background.
I’m a social worker experienced in program development and management in aging and caregiver services and health coaching and education programs. I’ve worked for the Alzheimer’s Association, United Healthcare, and as Care Management Director for Northwest Regional Council, the Area Agency on Aging serving Whatcom, Skagit, Island and San Juan Counties.
What’s most exciting to you about your new role with HLAA-WA?
I am excited to work together with the dedicated and skilled HLAA WA team on the development of a robust volunteer program that will reach people with hearing loss and wider healthcare, community, and social networks.
A couple of goals you’d like to see HLAA-WA achieve in 2026?
One goal is to recruit and train a group of volunteers to give presentations and participate in resource sharing and other events. Then, I’d like to see these activities educate and build awareness about hearing loss in Washington State, improve access so that individuals have support needed for full inclusion and participation, and increase the capability of organizations and providers to offer more accessible spaces and services.
What do you do in your free time?
I live in Bellingham with my dog, Lucy, a spirited 3-year old cattle dog mix who loves to be outside. A favorite activity is walking the trails together with dogs and friends in the beauty of the Pacific Northwest.
Favorite thing about the holidays?
The best part of Christmas is the beautiful music. I love singing and listening to concerts, choirs, and carols of the season, and celebrations shared with family and friends.
If you’re interested in volunteering with us, or you’re a current volunteer who’d like to get more involved, reach out to Julie for more details: jjohnson@hearingloss-wa.org.
